Milton Aery Painting of Seatedwoman in White Dress

During the interwar period, the European art scene was booming with avant-garde approaches, however, artists like Henri Matisse still had an important role in the further dissemination of Modernism. At approximately the same time, across the ocean, in America, Milton Avery, a figure of similar interests and approach as Matisse actively worked and inspired new generations.

In fact, this painter is by now considered one of the most significant and influential American artists of his time. Avery's captivating paintings featuring everyday subjects or landscapes characterized by harmony, balance, and a unique color sensibility had a major influence on Abstract Expressionism.

To relight the legacy of this modern master, the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and the Wadsworth Atheneum teamed up to organize a long-awaited survey (his last retrospective was presented at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1982) that brings a careful selection of around seventy of Avery's artworks.

The Relevance of Milton Avery

Avery was closely affiliated with young painters such as Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, and Adolph Gottlieb, who eventually stood at the forefront of the Abstract Expressionist movement. His style is a sort of hybrid and difficult to categorize as it was developed in between the time of the American Impressionists and that of the Abstract Expressionists. Edith Devaney, the Royal Academy of Arts curator, who organized the show stated the following:

I have long been fascinated by Milton Avery's remarkable work and the significant role he played in the development of American art in the 20th century. This is a timely moment to celebrate his considerable achievement and continued influence.

The Installment

The visitors will be able to experience the full trajectory of Avery's career through a production spanning from the 1910s to the mid-1960s. The exhibition starts with the works Avery has produced until the early 1940s that reveal the influence of the American Impressionists and the artist's fascination with the landscape.

The second chapter highlights Avery's mid-to late 1940s phase, during which he continuously put emphasis on the form. His late work, from the 1950s to the early 1960s, illustrates the apparent impact of European Modernists on his style, especially Henri Matisse, from whom Avery appropriates the usage of non-associative colors. These paintings also illuminate Avery's skillfulness in terms of balancing and abstracting the colors and shapes.
